What is Passover?
The festivals of Pesach (Passover), Shavuot and Succot
are known as the Pilgrim Festivals - "Shalosh Regalim" -
when the Israelites went in a joyous procession to
Jerusalem. Pesach celebrates the Exodus of the Israelites
from Egypt. The festival lasts eight days, from the 15th
to the 22nd of Nissan. During the Seder celebration we
read the Haggadah which tells the story of the Exodus.
During Pesach only unleavened bread called Matza is
eaten. This is a reminder of the time the Israelites
escaped from slavery in Egypt. They left in such a hurry
that there was no time for the dough to rise. The youngest
person present asks four questions starting with: why is
this night different from all other nights? The questions
are answered in the Haggadah.
This holiday begins on the night of the fifteenth day
of Nissan and lasts for eight days. The highlight of this
holiday, which commemorates the departure of the nation of
Israel from Egypt, is the observance of the Seder, a
ceremony performed on the first evenings of Passover.
